About the Foundation
The Satish Kumar Foundation was created to carry forward the legacy of one of the world's most respected ecological thinkers, peace activists and authors and to support the continuation of Schumacher College as an independent centre for transformative education. Dedicated to ecological education and the philosophy of reverential ecology, the Foundation launched with a powerful mission, a founding team of extraordinary credibility and significant personal connections. What it did not have was a fundraising history.
The challenge
As a newly registered charity, the Foundation had no donor database, no track record with funders and no existing major donor relationships to draw on. That connection mattered but a warm relationship is not the same as a secured gift. Translating personal affinity into a major donation requires strategy, preparation and writing that makes the case clearly, compellingly and at exactly the right moment.
Alira Arts was brought in as sole fundraising consultant to build that infrastructure and make the ask happen.
What we did
We started with the strategic foundations mapping the prospect landscape, identifying the strongest first approach and developing a major donor strategy calibrated to where the Foundation was at that moment: new, ambitious and needing to demonstrate both vision and viability.
From there we built the full case for support, prepared the Foundation's leadership for donor conversations and wrote the donor communication itself.
The result
Within six months of beginning the work, the Foundation secured a seven-figure gift from a single letter.
For an organisation with no fundraising history, no existing donor base and no prior major gift experience, this result was only possible because every element was aligned, the right prospect, the right moment, the right ask, and writing that gave the donor a clear and compelling reason to say yes.
